Finnish Startup Uses Heat from Bitcoin Miners to Heat 30 Homes

Summary of the news

  • SunBit, an energy startup from Finland, has installed 30 "Bitcoin Boilers" that use ASIC mining machines as a heat source for buildings, while utilizing the mined Bitcoin to offset electricity costs.
  • Each machine consumes about 5.3 kilowatts and mines approximately 1/12 of a Bitcoin per year. This model requires the price of Bitcoin to remain above around $70,000 for revenues to cover electricity costs.
  • The price of Bitcoin, currently around $76,000, is close to the breakeven point, and the impact of the Halving in 2028 should be monitored.

Price Impact Trend: Neutral

This news represents a niche business model with only 30 systems, so it does not significantly affect overall market trading. However, it reflects that the use of heat from Bitcoin mining is practically applicable at the household level.

On November 8, 2026, according to a report from SB Recommendations, a Finnish startup converted heat from Bitcoin mining into a home heating system, with the mining machines serving as the central heating units for the buildings. Further verified information indicates that the company is SunBit, which has 30 operational systems, and this was reported by CoinDesk.

How the system works

SunBit uses water-cooled mining machines, specifically the Bitmain Antminer S21 XP Hydro, installed in the building's boiler room. The machines convert nearly all electricity into heat, producing hot water at a maximum of around 60 degrees Celsius, which is sent to radiators and underfloor heating systems. The mined Bitcoin is used to offset the electricity costs for the building owners.

According to Elmeri Suomi, founder and CEO, each machine consumes about 46,400 kilowatt-hours per year, mining about 1/12 of a Bitcoin annually, resulting in a net income of around $6,100 after deducting a 10% management fee and pool fees at current prices.

Is it really free? Facts to consider

The term "free heater" used in the original post should be read carefully. Homeowners must invest around $20,000 or more upfront per system, and it will only be "free" if the value of the mined Bitcoin equals or exceeds the electricity costs. SunBit states that the price of Bitcoin must remain above around $70,000; if it falls below that, owners will incur losses compared to regular electricity costs. Currently, Bitcoin is trading at around $76,061, so it is still slightly above that threshold.

Additionally, the 30 systems are not just residential homes but also include single-family homes, historic mansions, and commercial buildings, with 29 systems located in Finland and 1 in the Netherlands. Furthermore, the mining machines function like resistance heaters, providing 1 unit of heat for every 1 unit of electricity used, while new heat pumps can provide about 2.5 to 3 units of heat per 1 unit of electricity. In the summer, when heating is not needed, any excess heat generated must be vented outside.

Risks from the 2028 Halving

A significant risk is the Bitcoin Halving expected in the spring of 2028, which will reduce the reward per block from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC. According to verified data, the breakeven price for these machines may rise to around $131,000 per BTC just to cover electricity costs, making it harder for owners to recoup their $20,000 installation investment.

The idea of utilizing heat from Bitcoin mining in Finland is not new. Large companies like MARA Holdings, Hashlabs, and Terahash Energy are already connecting multi-megawatt mining farms to city heating systems.

Previously, Siam Blockchain reported related news about Bitcoin mining, noting that independent Bitcoin miners have successfully mined 36 blocks this year.

Personally, I find this idea interesting as it turns "waste" heat into something useful. However, the term "free" is somewhat exaggerated, as owners must bear both a large upfront investment and the full risk of Bitcoin prices. If prices drop below $70,000, the numbers will change immediately, and the 2028 Halving is another factor to consider carefully. What should be monitored is the price of Bitcoin compared to the breakeven point and how many more homes or buildings will be installed.
