Mount Carmel Bans Cryptocurrency Mining and Data Centers
The town of Mount Carmel has decided to ban cryptocurrency mining and data centers as of July 23. This decision was made in response to growing local community opposition to large-scale data centers. Concerns such as increased electricity demand, noise, water consumption, and environmental impacts have come to the forefront. Similar discussions have taken place in Mt. Carmel Township in Pennsylvania. Local residents have argued that large data centers threaten their living spaces, demanding stricter zoning regulations and harsher penalties. Additionally, some citizens have stated that the fines imposed on businesses that do not comply with data center regulations are insufficient. Mount Carmel's decision is part of a broader trend of increasing restrictions on cryptocurrency mining and data centers across the United States. The town of Manlius in New York has also imposed a one-year moratorium on data centers due to environmental concerns. Morgan County in Alabama has temporarily halted projects for similar reasons. St. Joseph in Tennessee has enacted regulations banning data centers. These discussions have become more pronounced with the rise of AI-focused data centers. As cryptocurrency mining companies continue their search for cheap energy, local communities are bearing the costs of increased infrastructure burdens and environmental pressures.
