Telegram to Launch Non-Custodial Crypto Wallet for 1 Billion Users This Summer
Telegram plans to launch a non-custodial crypto wallet for its approximately 1 billion users this summer, according to CEO Pavel Durov. He described the initiative as the "largest rollout of a non-custodial crypto wallet in human history." Durov's announcement follows the recent rebranding of The Open Network's native cryptocurrency Toncoin to GRAM. Telegram has also replaced the TON Foundation as the ecosystem's main steward and validator. While details are limited, Durov hinted at "instant zero-fee crypto transactions." Telegram's existing crypto wallet, formerly known as TON Wallet, has over 150 million registered users and allows for the storage and trading of digital assets. The platform is seen as a potential gateway for broader crypto adoption. Telegram initially launched its TON project in 2018 but paused it due to legal issues with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
